Ria Sings Parklife!
Two weeks ago I was flying to Barcelona for my good friend Chris Stark‘s wedding to Ria. Chris & I have been friends for over a decade, since we worked together on club nights at Southampton University Student’s Union. I was so excited when Chris asked me to get involved. It’s a huge compliment because Chris knows so many amazing DJs. He co-presents with Scott Mills on BBC Radio 1 between 1pm and 4pm, Monday to Thursday.
Chris and Ria got married at Almiral de La Font, a beautiful villa near to Sitges & Barcelona.
Their outdoor ceremony was simply stunning in the late afternoon sun. After drinks, speeches and amazing food, it was time to party!
Chris chose an amazing drummer and saxophonist to play on the terrace. The party started with everyone dancing on the terrace (and the tables too!). I could tell we had a brilliant night in store…
The sun went down and I played a warm up set for beatbox trio Duke. I couldn’t resist dancing to their tunes and expecially the garage set. Who’d have thought it, a garage set from a beatbox band! As Chris said to me, we can’t understand why they don’t have an even bigger following.
Despite the heat, the last two hours were one massive party, with pop, indie, garage and drum & bass, followed by a sing along set for everyone. The terrace was empty and the dance floor full, with Ria singing Parklife (a speciality I’m told) and we finished with You Got The Love by The Source.
Chris arranged all of the equipment hire, but I was well prepared with two sets of headphones, three USB drives and CDs too. So if you’re thinking of getting married abroad (or in the UK) please get in touch.
Ria & Chris booked a brilliant photographer, Matt Hardy. Matt and I worked closely together over the two days to help things run nice and smoothly.
Ria gave me a big hug at the end and told me that Chris had said ‘if you hire Mark to DJ, you don’t need to worry about it’. I’m so pleased to hear this, it really is a BIG compliment.
And Africa the wedding planner had this to say ‘Thank you for being such a good DJ, you were so patient and always with a smile on your face. I really appreciate the smiles’.
